Oceanographers for a day
Oceanographers for a day is an excursion in which in addition to enjoying a walk by the sea there will also be activities that are very similar or the same as those undertaken by scientists to obtain data and information on seawater.
Departure is from the Aguadulce Marina and the route takes us towards the Playa de Aguadulce Posidonia Control Centre. There you will be able to observe the ancient reef formed by a field of Posidonia oceanica with the help of an aquascope. You can clearly see the "step" made by these plants over thousands of years. We then take samples of the water to measure the ph and temperature using a specific testing device and entering the data into a spreadsheet.
We also use a Secchi disk to control vertical visibility. While at sea we will be able to sight marine birds with the binoculars and they can be identified from a chart we have on board. As we will be cruising near the fish factory we will bet quite a close-up view of them.
During the cruise we will learn how to use an Echo Sound, a GPS and the technique of Piloting to establish a point at sea without using electronic devices. We will also use a plankton collection net to take samples. When we arrive at the Diving Centre we will already have the samples mounted so the plankton can be observed under the microscope to see if they contain any microplastics. Duration one and a half hours approximately.
An excursion for people of all ages.
