Andalusia, film destination. What was filmed here?

Arrozales Isla Mínima

Discover the presence of Andalusia in films. The eight provinces of Andalusia have often been featured in films and series. Guess what was actually filmed in these places.

Seville. Marshland and the largest rice field in Europe.

The film's director, Alberto Rodríguez, discovered this setting in a photographic exhibition about the marshlands of the Guadalquivir River.

Guadalquivir. Once there, he also discovered the vast geometric fields that surround the Marshland, in the province of Seville, and which are part of the largest rice field in Europe.

It turned out to be the perfect setting for a mystery which took place in the eighties. Marshland does not only have stunning locations, it also won ten Goya awards, including Best Film.

The city of Seville is also famous as a scene for the renowned super-production, Attack of the Clones, the second episode of the legendary Star Wars saga. In this case, the Plaza España was no longer in the Andalusian city but moved to the planet Naboo.

Málaga. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in La Malagueta, the best representation of the Cayman Islands.

The final sequence of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was filmed in Malaga. It was the first film in the adaptation of Millennium, the famous trilogy by the Swedish journalist Stieg Larsson. The specific location was on the Paseo Pablo Ruiz Picasso promenade, opposite the Hotel Las Vegas, overlooking the Playa La Malagueta beach.

The director, Niels Ardiev Oplev, declared that the Malaga coast perfectly captured the essence of the Cayman Islands

Cádiz. Night and Day: chases through the streets of Cádiz disguised as Seville.

Cadiz was disguised as Seville for an impossible chase. The sequence can be seen in Knight and Day, a film released in 2010. Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz are the stars in this action film and this exciting scene.

The chase starts in the Casa Pilatos (Seville) and in the area around the Cathedral. Using the magic of editing, Cádiz is turned into Seville. The Calle Cánovas and the Calle Ancha become the features in this impressive action sequence, full of acrobatics and doubles. The chase ends up back in Seville without most of the spectators even realising it.

Action films seem to pursue the city of Cádiz. In 2002 it became Havana for the filming of Die Another Day, a classic in the saga of the agent 007, played by Pierce Brosnan. The scene is located in La Caleta, where Halle Berry and Pierce Brosnan have their first encounter in the film.

Jaén. Alatriste: The majesty of the historical city centre of Úbeda.

If you have seen the film you'll remember the brilliant performance of Viggo Mortensen in this adaptation of The Adventures of Captain Alatriste, the famous novel by Arturo Pérez-Reverte.

Apart from being the sixth most expensive film ever produced for Spanish cinema, the film won three Goya Awards, and revealed the charm of the historic centre of Úbeda, in the province of Jaén. Most of filming took place in the Plaza Vázquez de Molina.

Other monuments in the city were used, like the Hospital de Santiago and the Gothic cloister of the Collegiate Church of Santa María de los Reales Alcázares, which witnessed the duel between Alatriste, Malatesta and Íñigo Balboa.

Granada. Explore the city with Tadeo Jones!

Granada is the great setting for the second adventure of Tadeo Jones: The Secret of King Midas . The plot of this animated feature film by Enrique Gato takes place in the city, which has been completely recreated by computer and in great detail: the Cuesta del Chapiz, the Carrera del Darro, the Albaicín and the Alhambra are just some of the recognisable sites.

Don't miss out on the exploits of Tadeo Jones and enjoy yourself along with the children.

Huelva. El Buitrón, transformed into a small Bolivian village.

2008 saw the release of Che, Guerrilla, directed by Steven Soderberg and starring Benicio del Toro, in the role of Che Guevara.

The village of the El Buitrón, in Zalamea la Real (Huelva), was dressed up for a few days to look like a small Bolivian village. Even the local inhabitants took part as extras in the biopic.

Huelva was the scene of a great classic a long time back. The dunes of the Doñana National Park were the location for the Nafud desert in the full-length film of Lawrence of Arabia

Almería. Indiana Jones found the ark in Cabo de Gata

En 1981, Steven Spielberg parked his caravan in Almería to shoot one of the most intense scenes for the first episode of the most popular archaeologist in film: Indiana Jones and the Lost Ark.

In the sequence, a plane pursues the stars of the film who are trying to escape after a forced landing. The scene was filmed on the Playa de Mónsul beach, one of the best-known in Cabo de Gata, and easy to recognise by the huge rock which is right at the entrance to the seashore.

The virgin Almería coastline has also been the location for Spanish films like Off Course, which is a true reflection of the spectacular Cabo de Gata.

Córdoba. Game of Thrones and the appearance of the Roman Bridge

In 2014, the Roman bridge in Cordoba became the Long bridge joining the two areas of free city of Volantis via the Rhoyne River. This was the location for a scene from the sixth season of the successful series Game of Thrones.

The Roman bridge, built in the 1st century AD, is 247 metres long and has 16 arches and, although its presence in real life is already imposing and spectacular, the special effects team for the series gave it a special touch by crowning it with some wooden structures.
