Castellar and the Monarch Butterfly

Mariposa monarca

In the area surrounding the town of Castellar de la Frontera, in the Campo de Gibraltar region, there is a path that is renowned for the unexpected presence of one of the most beautiful and impressive insects that can be found in the world, and of course in Andalusia: The monarch butterfly.

This species of nomadic Lepidoptera is native to mountainous areas in North America, where there are a large number of populations and colonies. Their unmistakably ostentatious wings, orange with black lines, have made it one of the most photographed butterflies in the world.

During the winter months, they make long flights to California and Mexico in search of warmer climates, making them the insect that travels the longest distance when migrating, up to 4,000 kilometres!

Flying, against all odds, to Andalusia

The presence of this species in the province of Cádiz, so far from its natural habitat, dates back to the end of the 19th century. The experts who have studied them assure us that they reached Europe by flying across the Atlantic Ocean, carried by incredibly strong air currents.

The truth is that 'the monarch butterfly' discovered an ideal and cosy place to stay in Andalusia. What this colourful insect found here was the two plants on which they feed: Milkweed and tennis ball bush (Gomphocarpus fruticosus), both abundant here and flowering for most of the year.

The Monarch Butterfly Trail in Castellar follows a linear path along the banks of the Guadarranque River. A riverside environment full of leafy trees, such as ash trees and gall oaks, which are surrounded by ferns, bushes and meadows. It is in these surroundings that the butterfly is seen more frequently, especially on hot summer days. This is an easy route even for small children.

A visit to the region of Castellar in search of 'the monarch butterfly' is also an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful landscapes in the Los Alcornocales Nature Reserve.
