Exploring the museums in Malaga

Over the years, the city of Malaga has harvested a range of museums of international renown that many great cities in the world would be happy to have due to the importance of the works housed in the city as well as the numerous artists of great international fame that exhibit at our galleries.

The city has no more and no less than 36 museums, mainly located within the historic quarter, turning Malaga into one of the cities with the greatest number of museums on the whole international scene.

Pablo Picasso Museum

The first and perhaps the one that most represents the city is, of course, the Picasso Museum.

With three and a half million visitors a year, it is one of the most visited museums in Spain and, inside it, you can enjoy numerous works donated by Bernard Picasso and also by his daughter-in-law.

Thanks to their donations, the dream of the Malaga artist having a space for all to enjoy in his hometown came true, and what better place for it than the Buenavista Palace.

232 works exhibited in 11 rooms will allow you discover the best works of one of the most important painters in Spain and in world history of contemporary art.

Pompidou Centre Museum

For the city of Malaga and for travellers visiting the city, it is a real privilege to have the first Pompidou Museum outside French territory.

You will not be unmoved by a visit to this museum under any circumstances as experiencing the message from many of the works in this centre of contemporary art is in itself an experience worth having.

Disciplines such as photography, architecture, sculpture, painting, design, sound, video, etc. play very important roles when it comes to allowing all of the visitors who cross the doors of this unique museum to reflect.

Located in the so-called "Malaga Cube”, you will find works by the aforementioned Picasso, and by other artists such as Francis Bacon, Giacometti, Magritte, Brancusi, De Chirico, Frida Khalo, Chagall and Kandinsky.

Russian Museum Collection

Located in the huge, old tobacco factory in Malaga, the Russian Museum in Malaga is a nexus between Russian art and Andalusia through a selection of over one hundred works dated between the 15th and 20th centuries, and a couple of temporary rooms which provide a dialogue between the San Petersburg Museum and its namesake in Malaga.

Meanwhile, the permanent exhibition of the Russian Museum Collection revolves around 9 themed areas: Those known as Avant-garde, old Russian art, the 18th century, Romanticism in Russia, the "World of Art” movement and Neo-primitivism, Realism with Russian subject matters, Social Realism and art from the Thaw, the names given to the period after the death of Stalin.

The works we will find in this wonderful area dedicated to Russian art are the living proof of the rich Russian artistic legacy of recent centuries, with works by such well-known artists as Repin, Kandinsky, Tatlin, Rodchenko and Chagall, amongst others.

Thyssen Museum Collection

Almost 3 years old, the Carmen Thyssen Museum Malaga has gradually —thanks to major exhibitions— become one of the most important cultural areas of the city and all of Andalusia.

Real gems of priceless value by artists such as Mariano Fortuna, Joaquín Sorolla and Ricard Canals…

Not to mention famous artists such as Courbet, Julio Romero de Torres, Van Gogh, Monet and Léger…
