The cheerful and jovial personality of Isla Cristina is present in its various local fiestas, with its famous Carnivals in February, one of the oldest and Spain's best-known, declared Festival of Tourist Interest in Andalusia. According to tradition, the Carnival is held 40 days before Holy Week, coinciding with the "Burial of the Sardine" with Ash Wednesday.
The Carnival of Isla Cristina has firstly, the Music Group Competition where the island village and outsiders actively participate in music groups, bands of minstrels, quartets and choirs, filling the Horacio Noguera Municipal Theatre with colour and joy, then giving way to the Street Carnival, starting Sunday with the Grand Float Parade dances and costume contests and that, during an entire week, fill all corners of Isla Cristina with fantasy, imagination and fun.
