Founded by the Catholic Monarchs in Santa Fe in 1492. It was placed under the patronage of Saint Catherine and transferred to Granada immediately. Construction began in 1492 and was completed in 1547 under Diego de Siloé. Its stunning vaults, decorated with coffering, and the elegant cloister next to the main gallery, are particularly outstanding. Stones from the Moorish Elvira Gate were used in its construction. It is home to the mortal remains of the Gran Capitán.
The Monastery had a wealth of valuable ornaments, but was pillaged by the French and subsequently turned into a barracks. Some years ago it was restored thanks to collaboration between the University of Granada and the Jerónima order of nuns.
