As is true of other manifestations of our culture, the vision of popular Andalusian architecture has not escaped the all-too-easy simplification that literature and films often resort to.

On some occasions, there has even been a tendency to represent its features as the most typical image of all that is Spanish. Nevertheless, in an area as vast as Andalusia, with its orographic and climatic variations - coastlines, marshlands, countryside, mountains and semi-desert areas - the solutions reflected in popular architecture are actually characterised by diversity.

However, there are common threads that can be found running through it. In the first place, the use of lime, which for reasons of hygiene became widespread, not so long ago, throughout Andalusia, and secondly, the visible effects of the Muslim presence that lasted over eight centuries.
