Tours of romantic Andalusia

Romanticism chose Andalusia and reinvented it. Its multicoloured landscape, its hazardous hidden paths, its mysterious ruins, the Moorish layout of its villages and cities and, above all, its vivid, popular atmosphere, appealed to the thirst for adventure and travelling fashion of Europeans who wished to escape rationalism and modernity.

British, French and Germans sailed and rode the width and length of Andalusia in search of contrast and exoticism. Not all these travellers were similar, nonetheless.

Many preferred those routes which, besides displaying picturesque atmospheres and outstanding monuments, were also safe and had regular transportation. Travel books and guides, which at the time were beginning to be published in Europe, guided them in their itineraries.

Others, on the contrary, chose less conventional paths which, at the price of greater discomfort and danger, led them to a world both unusual and unexplored. And not all of Andalusia would arouse equal expectation. Romantic sensibility would determine that certain monuments and landscapes were fashionable, whereas others would fail to catch their interest.

Ruins and Moorish and medieval architecture were preferred by these people who yearned to recover the past through the imaginary. In much the same way, the rustic, rough landscape, the precipice, the mountain - in short, the attraction of the abyss - the unploughed boundless fields, were their favourite entourage.
