Gorafe Star Park and Los Coloraos Astronomical Complex

Vía Láctea Gorafe

Since prehistoric times, people have been fascinated by the unfathomable mysteries of the universe. As their Neolithic ancestors already did, the residents of the small town of Gorafe continue to look up towards the stars.

This municipality, with just over 400 inhabitants and surrounded by nature areas such as Sierra de Baza mountains, the Gorafe Megalithic Park and Sierra Nevada mountains, is proud to be the first Andalusian town to be awarded the Star Park certification.

A must-see for astrotourists travelling through Granada, Gorafe offers its visitors the chance to observe the stars at Los Coloraos Astronomical Complex. This centre aims to become a benchmark for stargazing and, thanks to its commitment to protecting the night skies, it has the Starlight Camp accreditation.

Thanks to the location of Los Coloraos, in the heart of Granada Geopark at an altitude of almost 900 metres, it offers a pollution-free space and good atmospheric quality. An excellent natural viewpoint where many stargazing and scientific dissemination activities take place, aimed at people of all ages.

Comprehensive facilities and activities under the stars

This 1,250 m2 complex has several areas fitted out and prepared for stargazing with robotic telescopes, and it carries out research projects, concerts and cultural events in an open-air setting. Visitors can round off their experience by combining it with hiking at night and camping trips, organised under the bright light of the stars.

Every summer, this town in Granada hosts the Skies of Gorafe Astrotourism Days, an annual event in which talks and conferences with experts in the field are take place. In addition, the town lights are switched off so that the night sky can be enjoyed without light pollution. During the observation, participants will be able to see the stars of the solar system through four powerful telescopes. Imagine that!
