In the 17th and 18th centuries, Granada was an artistic centre of enormous influence in Andalusian baroque. Some of its masterpieces are to be found here, such as the innovative facade of the Renaissance Cathedral, designed by Alonso Cano in 1667.

Other baroque parts of the cathedral are the Vestry, Chapter House, Oratory of the Canons, altarpieces and Sagrario. In the Vestry and Sagrario of La Cartuja, a perfect symbiosis of baroque architecture, sculpture and painting, F. Hurtado Izquierdo´s work may be admired.

The Triunfo de la Inmaculada is also a pioneering work by Alonso de Mena, in front of the Hospital Real, of which he designed a façade. Also worth a visit are the churches of Santos Justo y Pastor, La Magdalena, Las Angustias, El Perpetuo Socorro, Santo Domingo (chapel of Virgen del Rosario. F. Rodriguez Navajas carved the beautiful canopy of the main altar in 1700), the Hospital of San Juan de Dios, Los Hospitalicios, San Ildefonso, Santo Domingo in the convent of Santa Cruz la Real and the convent of Nuestra Señora de Gracia. The Colegiata del Sacromonte is the highlight in an itinerary of crosses and chapels, very much in the baroque taste.

Under civilian architecture, the most outstanding is the façade of la Madraza, or old Town Hall. The University (old Colegio de la Compañia) has an interesting façade, and so does the College of Notaries (old Ansoti Palace) and the Diputación Provincial (old Bibataubín castle).

Near Granada, at Víznar, there is the Palace of the Archbishop Moscoso y Peralta, which includes an 18th century garden with Italian and colonial influences. At Guadix, there is a remarkable cathedral with façades by V. Acero and T. Cayón, and an interesting façade at the Seminary.

At Baza, there is the tower of the Colegiata, the church of La Merced and Los Dolores. At Cúllar Baza, there is the parish church and the Palace of the Marquess.
