Sierra de Camarolos - Arco Calizo Central

Within the privileged setting of Villanueva del Rosario, the Sierra de Camarolos - Arco Calizo Central Route starts at Llano Hondonero and heads toward the natural spring of the same name, following a well-signposted trail that passes through a beautiful pine grove and gently ascends to the Pico de la Cruz (1,444 m.). On the way you can sometimes see mountain goats climbing the steep gorges of the Pico Nacimiento (1,249 m), while you can still enjoy the great landscape.

The aforementioned peak, at its highest point, is an incredible place where the GuadalmedinaRiver is born and which, passing through the Limonero Reservoir, will descend to the city of Malaga, where it flows into the sea. This is an ideal place for taking magnificent photographs. From here, the descent via the Morrón de la Cruz begins towards a spectacular valley where the previously mentioned river flows in the rainy season.

To reach the next destination, Pico Chamizo (1,641 m), situated in the neighbouring Sierra del Jobo, you will pass through Las Camarolas and El Torcal, the gems of these majestic mountains, following a rural trail duly signposted with boundary stones, which we advise you follow due to the demanding nature of the karst landscape. This leads to a natural viewpoint overlooking the south and a beautiful valley in the Axarquía region: here, from north-east to south-west, you can see Alfarnate and Alfarnatejo beyond the Sierra de Enmedio, the Sierra del Rey, three majestic gorges (Fraile, Doña Ana and Gómer), and the Navazo Vílchez and Navazo del Murciélago. Further afield, you can see La Viñuela Reservoir beneath the sublime Maroma (2,065 m) and the towns of Periana, Riogordo, Colmenar and the mountainous Comares.

When there is fog we do not recommend climbing the Chamizo as this makes the ascent dangerous.
